Samra Khawaja’s dream of becoming a journalist has happened quickly. The Washington Post chose her as one of 12 college students to cover the 2012 presidential election.
“Everything is falling into place ever since coming to VCU,” she said. “It’s a great place to get your foot in the door.”
Khawaja said VCU’s professors have helped her achieve her goals, but her own initiative deserves credit. After interviewing the founder of Tumblr at VCU, she submitted her article to a local CBS affiliate. The story was posted online on the channel’s website.
“That was an eye-opening experience,” she said. “I thought to myself, ‘This is it. This is definitely something I can say that I’ve done at VCU and nowhere else.’ It was really cool.”
